Frank of Ireland is a physical and ridiculous brand of humor with an original twist. Brian Gleeson (Peaky Blinders, The Bisexual), stars as Frank Marron, a 32-year-old catastrophe; a misanthropic fantasist in arrested development who’s convinced that the world owes him. He's also our hero. Frank is newly single and still lives at home with his mother, Mary (Pom Boyd, Rosie). He’s a self-proclaimed musician with a tenuous hold on reality, and hasn’t written a song or played a gig in years. His ex-girlfriend Áine (Sarah Greene, Dublin Murders) has just found a new boyfriend, and Frank may be finding that a tad difficult. Luckily, Frank has a loyal best friend, Doofus, (Domhnall Gleeson, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) whose full-time job is clearing the debris left in Frank’s wake. Set in an idyllic suburb of Dublin, Frank of Ireland is the hilarious story of a man’s hapless search for respect, as he struggles to grow up and get his life together, and hopefully not burn everything to the ground in the process.
Frank of Ireland is executive produced by Clelia Mountford and Sharon Horgan for Merman, Brian Gleeson, Domhnall Gleeson, and Michael Moloney. The series is a co-production between Channel 4 and Amazon Studios, and is produced by Rory Gilmartin and directed by MJ Delaney for Merman.

With the help of best friend, Doofus, Frank is determined to win back his ex, Áine, by learning MMA, and playing his first gig in years – her grandmother’s funeral. Will Frank succeed in impressing Áine, or will it be a disaster?
2 - James Caan’t
With Mary bed-bound for the day, Frank and Doofus drug her with sleeping pills so they can complete their chores in peace. But in trying to nurse her back to health, have they killed her in the process? And will Frank complete his chores?
3 - We Need to Talk About Kevin Costner
Frank and Doofus set out to expose P-B as the ‘yoked-up party boy’ that Frank’s sure he is. But, while collecting evidence against him, Frank starts to fall under his spell. Will P-B become his new bestie? Is this the end of Frank and Doofus?
4 - A Good Few Angry Women
When Doofus is recruited to write the music for a local am-dram performance of ‘Twelve Angry Women’, Frank wants some limelight for himself. But when his new songs don’t receive the acclaim he’d like, how far will Frank go to be the star of the show?
5 - Guitar
When Frank learns that Mary’s going to sell their home, and he’ll have to move out on his own, he lashes out and barricades himself in. But he can’t keep her out forever - will Frank finally be forced to leave home for good?
6 - Memento Mary
It’s Frank’s birthday and Doofus, Mary and Áine decide to gift him an intervention. His life’s stuck in a cycle, and they want him to break free. Will Frank be able to break the cycle and finally grow up?
Character Descriptions
Doofus is Frank’s wingman and best friend/gopher. It’s Doofus’ job to big up Frank whenever he needs it (often), while also clearing the debris relentlessly left in Frank’s wake. It’s a big job for such a fellow. Doofus regards his friend with childlike awe and sees him as Frank wishes to be seen - a genius, and the coolest man on the planet. In return, he is rewarded with perpetual abuse. Obviously this is bad for both of them, but it’s so much easier to stay together than take on the world alone.
Frank Marron is a 32-year-old catastrophe; a misanthropic fantasist in arrested development, convinced that the world owes him something. He’s also our hero. Frank has a tenuous hold on reality, a single room in his mother’s house, an ex he can’t get over, and a non-existent career as a singer-songwriter, due to the fact that he can’t really sing or write any songs. His only fan is his loyal best friend, who he treats abominably, and together they spend their days trying to make the world a better place (for Frank). We don’t want Frank to succeed, but it’s fun to watch him try.
Mary has a laissez-faire attitude to life, a bohemian lifestyle, and a 1995 Volvo in reasonable condition. She’s single and enjoys a pint at the weekend, and also during the week and sometimes in the mornings. She is, basically, happy. The only barrier to that happiness is her son Frank - she loves him, but he’s a huge pain in her arse. Frank is prone to making the odd, massive, life-changing mistake, and is too profoundly broke to even consider paying the price. Mary is not the type of person to pick up her own cheque, let alone someone else’s, so she often suffers as a result.
Since her break up with Frank six years ago, Áine has been trying to move on with her life. Unfortunately a total lack of ambition and drive has thwarted this. She blames Frank, viewing him as the ‘bad penny’ stilting her progress, but the truth is that Áine’s also responsible. As our story begins, she’s started a new relationship with a doctor, and has chosen to break the news to Frank in the worst possible way. The ‘skills’ section of her CV mentions her responsible attitude and strong singing voice, but we'll discover that neither of these things are close to being true.
