His traumatic history affects his work investigating brutal crimes and his relationships with his only living family members, sister Juliette (Charlotte Riley), his nephew and on-off girlfriend, Sylvie.
In 2017, Riley was seen in season four of the hugely successful series Peaky Blinders, in which she returned as May Carlton. Before this, she was seen in Rupert Goold's BAFTA TV nominated TV special, King Charles III. Riley played Kate Middleton, alongside Adam James and Tim Pigott-Smith. In 2016 Riley was seen as Rachel Lombard in Stephen Poliakoff's Close To The Enemy. The six-part Cold War drama is set in a bomb-damaged hotel in London in the aftermath of WWII. Other cast members included Jim Sturgess, Freddie Highmore, Angela Bassett and Alfred Molina.
On the big screen, Riley was also seen in London Has Fallen, which saw Gerard Butler return as Mike Banning. At the Prime Minister's funeral in London, a plot is uncovered to assassinate all the world leaders in attendance. Morgan Freeman, Radha Mitchell and Aaron Eckhart also starred in this action thriller.
2015 saw Riley star in a plethora of varied roles in both films and television series. In December, Riley featured in the Ron Howard film, In the Heart Of The Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth. The cast included Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Cillian Murphy. The story is based on an event in 1820 in which a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. Riley was seen back on television screens earlier in the year in the much-anticipated BBC adaptation of Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norrell. The series starred Bertie Carvel, Eddie Marsan and Alice Englert.
2014 was a busy year for Riley on both the big and small screen. She was seen in season two of the hugely popular 1920's gangster drama series Peaky Blinders, taking on the role of May Carlton opposite Cillian Murphy, Helen McCory and Tom Hardy. Riley was also seen in the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt blockbuster The Edge Of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman.
In 2012 Riley starred in Channel 4 TV mini-series World Without End. Riley led the stellar cast, including Cynthia Nixon, Miranda Richardson and Peter Firth. She also starred in Mike Bartlett's series, The Town (ITV), directed by Colin Teague.
Taking charge of the lead in Grand Street, Riley portrayed protagonist Camilla a woman facing job and homelessness, opposite Tom Byam Shaw. Once again taking the leading role, Riley starred in Steve Stone's Entity, a nineties-based horror film.
Before this, she was seen in a reoccurring role in (ITV) Crime Drama DCI Banks as Lucy Payne, starring with a cast consisting of Stephen Tompkinson and Andrea Lowe. In the same year, she was seen in more TV Dramas, including a role in FOYLES WAR as 'Mandy Dean' in the episode' Killing Time. Taking on the role of Margot Bence, she starred in Agatha Christie's page-to-screen adaption of The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side in the same year.
In 2009 Riley tackled the universally known role of Catherine Earnshaw in an ITV adaption of the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights. She starred opposite Tom Hardy as Heathcliff. This was followed by a regular role in the TV series The Take, a crime-based Drama, once again acting alongside Tom Hardy. In 2008 Riley had a supporting role in Stephan Elliott's EASY VIRTUE alongside Colin Firth, Ben Barnes and Jessica Biel.
