Ten Percent
What do entertainment agents do? Most people don’t really know. In fact, many of them don’t even know. Half the job is thinking on one’s feet, and the other half is a combination of business acumen, interpersonal struggle to stay on everyone’s good side, and reading way too much. And that’s just the top of the pile.
The real answer, of course, is management of people. Keeping clients happy, while keeping clients close to reality, while keeping clients honest. More than anything else, it’s human. And because of that, it matters.
It matters because we’re in a world where everybody knows that lives, careers, and futures can be transformed forever in an instant. Life altering decisions can be made at pace and under pressure. One phone call, one email, or one opportunity can change or occasionally, save a life and career.
These are the moments that agents live for. It’s what they’re about, and what they’re really for.
Our central agency, Nightingale Hart, is a small London talent agency set up in the 1980s, now existing in the modern day as it struggles to adjust to changing tides and trends in an ever-protean industry.
In this sense, the series is about the world of entertainment, but it’s truly about human relationships.
Most centrally, our series follows the founder of the agency, RICHARD NIGHTINGALE – a maven of the industry now late in life, along with his much-less-likable son, JONATHAN, his long-time business partner STELLA, top agents DAN and REBECCA, and a host of assistants, talent, and related figures in the world.
This is the central dynamic of the series – the parallels and push-pulls of work and home life. Many times, in the entertainment industry, they have a habit of colliding – at times when those concerned need it least. Agents fall for clients. Clients become enamoured with assistants. Nepotism exalts. Romance, jobs, family, friendship, drinking-buddies, fear, love, loathing, and culture coalesce into one.
