Mackinnon has also directed episodes of Dirk Gently for BBC America, and episodes of Outlander for Starz/Sony/Left Bank. Mackinnon was lead director on Line of Duty (series 2), which won the 2015 RTS Award for Best Series, as well as being nominated for a BAFTA in the same category, and won Best Drama Series in the 2014 Freesat Awards.

Mackinnon has directed over 50 hours of network television drama and feature film The Flying Scotsman (released worldwide by MGM). Other credits include Robin Hood, Taggart, Jekyll, Bodies, Silent Witness as well as single television films for ITV and the BBC.
James Nesbitt received a Golden Globe nomination for Jekyll, directed by Douglas, written by Steven Moffat and was nominated for a Rose d’Or, and Jekyll won the Saturn Award for Best International Series. Bodies won RTS Best Series and was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best Series. Mackinnon wrote and directed Calum Dongle, nominated in Best Children’s at both the Scottish BAFTA Television Awards and the Celtic Media Festival. The Flying Scotsman - nominated for 5 Scottish BAFTAs - won the Grand Prix for Best International Sports Film at the Russian Film Festival.
