James made her feature film debut playing the lead role of Laura in the NZ film The Changeover, alongside Timothy Spall, Melanie Lynskey, Lucy Lawless and Nicholas Galitzine. The film screened as part of the Alice nella Citta sidebar at the Rome Film Festival in 2017, the 2018 Sydney Film Festival and the 2018 Bucheon International Film Festival in South Korea. Co-directed by Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie, the film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name.
James is of Māori heritage. Her iwi are Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei and Waikato Tainui.
