Josie Lawrence trained at Dartington College of Arts, where she gained a Theatre degree B.A. Honours and was later made an Honorary Doctor of Arts. She has also been awarded the Doctor of Arts (Wolverhampton University), and Doctor of Letters (Aston University). In 2011 she was awarded the Freedom of Sandwell.
