While at Juilliard, Beharie landed the female lead in Universal’s American sports film, The Express. In the same year, Beharie had her debut performance in the independent film, American Violet, playing the lead and starring opposite Alfre Woodard. Shortly afterward, Beharie continued her trajectory in the industry by working with heavy hitters such as director Steve McQueen, on Shame, opposite Michael Fassbender.
