Richard Tanne made his writing and directing debut with Southside with You, which premiered in Dramatic Competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was purchased by Miramax and Roadside Attractions. The film, a romantic drama about Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, was released theatrically worldwide and went on to gross six times its micro-indie budget. Tanne garnered numerous awards and nominations for his work on the film, including the Rotten Tomatoes Award for the best-reviewed romance of the year and a Gotham Award nod for Breakthrough Director. The film appeared on best-of lists in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Huffington Post, RogerEbert.com and The Hollywood Reporter, among others.

From 2014 to 2016 Tanne was a contract screenwriter at Pixar Animation Studios and in 2017 he sold an original pitch to Sony Pictures for a film he is slated to write and direct.
