We look back at his life, as the prosecution and defense begin building their cases heading into the trial. While Daniel continues to declare his innocence of the crime, his best friend Larry Demery takes a plea deal and prepares to testify against him.

As Larry takes the stand, pinning the murder on Daniel, we delve into their long-standing friendship. After Demery’s testimony, it is now the defense’s chance to make their case, but Daniel is not provided with the proper defense he was due. Just as this seems to be the end, we find out that the jury did not hear all of the evidence and one piece of information brings the entire case into doubt.

Over the course of 20 years Daniel continues to fight for his freedom in vain until he finds an advocate in Christine Mumma, leader of the North Carolina Center for Actual Innocence, who re-evaluates the case in an effort to bring a new trial to the courts.
